The INAMI is launching a pilot project to improve the financing of home nursing care. Why? Because nurses do more than just provide technical services: they help patients become more independent, coordinate care, prevent problems, and more. These essential tasks are not always recognised, even though they give patients more tools to better manage their needs, care, and treatment, and potentially become more independent.
With this project, the’INAMI wishes to explore a new model based on quality and patient needs, paying by the hour rather than per procedure. The aim is to allow more time for care, coordination and human interaction. This will restore the patient as a partner in their care plan.
This model could be a game changer for patients and professionals alike: greater continuity, higher quality, and greater recognition of the profession. It offers nurses the opportunity to rediscover the very essence of their profession.
In practice? The INAMI is currently seeking pioneers. A thousand nurses will be able to join the two-year project (June 2026 to June 2028), spread across Brussels, Flanders and Wallonia, including both self-employed and salaried staff. Participating in this trial means giving home nursing care a real chance to operate differently. It means seeing whether this dynamic is viable!
As for the patient, there is obviously no financial impact. But the INAMI hopes for closer, more comprehensive and more appropriate monitoring. A return to the true meaning of nursing and patient care.
This could therefore be an important step for the future of home care in Belgium!
